Why Korea’s KOSPI Fell 21% in Seven Trading Days (Oct 2–15, 2026)

As of the close on Thursday, October 15, 2026 (KST). Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index closed at 5,554.22 on October 15, down 454.59 points (−7.57%) on the day and its seventh straight daily loss. That leaves it 20.70% below its October 2 close of 7,003.74, the last close before the losing streak began. October 2 was not the index’s peak: the KOSPI closed higher on September 23 (7,080.92) and, much higher, on June 22 (9,114.55). Through October 14, reports pointed to heavy foreign selling, weak semiconductor sentiment, and caution over oil prices and US inflation data; on October 15, Yonhap linked the plunge to renewed doubts about returns on AI investment. This article explains what happened. It is not a forecast or investment advice.

October 15 in brief: the KOSPI opened 5.59% lower at 5,673.01, and the Korea Exchange briefly halted program trading (a “sidecar”) at 9:08 a.m. Later, with both the KOSPI and the KOSDAQ down more than 8%, a level-1 circuit breaker halted trading in each market for 20 minutes (Yonhap, Etoday). The KOSPI closed at 5,554.22 and the KOSDAQ at 760.82 (−7.65%) (Yonhap, Seoul Economic Daily). Yonhap said it was the KOSPI’s biggest one-day fall in both points and percentage since July 28.

The market was closed on October 9 for Hangeul Day. Closes from October 2 to 14 come from the Bank of Korea’s official statistics database, ECOS (Oct 1–13, Oct 12–14). ECOS had not yet posted the October 15 close when this article was updated (about 4:15 p.m. KST), so the October 15 close of 5,554.22 comes from news reports citing the Korea Exchange (Yonhap, Seoul Economic Daily). The percentage changes are our calculations from these closes; Yonhap also put the seven-day fall at 1,449.52 points, or about 21%.

On October 14 the index traded as high as 6,190.65 and as low as 5,944.65 before closing just above 6,000. On October 15 it fell as low as 5,450.81 (−9.29%) in the afternoon before recovering part of the loss, according to Yonhap.

Is it “21% from the peak”?

Not exactly. The 21% figure (20.70%) measures the drop from October 2, the day before the streak began. Measured against earlier highs in the official ECOS series, the October 15 close is:

Why Korea's KOSPI Fell 21% in Seven Trading Days (Oct 2–15, 2026)
Earlier close Level October 15 vs that close
June 22, 2026 (highest close in the ECOS data we checked, May 28 – Oct 13) 9,114.55 about −39.1%

October 2, 2026 (start of the streak) 7,003.74 −20.70%

Sources: ECOS (Jun 11–24, Sep 18 – Oct 2). The percentages are our calculations, using the October 15 close reported by Yonhap and Seoul Economic Daily. Yonhap News TV reported a then-record close of 8,801.49 on June 2 (Yonhap News TV), and ECOS shows higher closes later in June.

What drove the slide

The three drivers below were reported for the sessions up to October 14. For October 15, Yonhap and Korea JoongAng Daily (citing Yonhap) pointed to renewed doubts about AI spending and the hotter-than-expected US inflation figure described under Driver 3.

Driver 1: Foreign investors sold

Why Korea's KOSPI Fell 21% in Seven Trading Days (Oct 2–15, 2026)

On October 14, foreign investors were net sellers of about ₩1.18 trillion of KOSPI shares, and individuals of about ₩309 billion. Institutions were net buyers of about ₩805 billion (Seoul Economic Daily Signal, Nocut News). Foreigners started the day as buyers and switched to selling in the afternoon (The Fact). Seoul Economic Daily Signal also reported foreign net selling of ₩4.53 trillion on October 13; that figure comes from a single outlet. Early tallies of investor trading on October 15 differed between sources, so we don’t report them here.

Driver 2: Semiconductor sentiment

Chipmakers dominate Korea’s index.
– US chip stocks: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 0.23% on October 13 (US time), its fifth straight decline. Micron fell 3.6% and Applied Materials about 7%. Reports cited technical progress at China’s CXMT and worries about returns on AI spending (The Fact).
– ASML results: ASML’s third-quarter results on October 14 did not lift the market. Its shares fell after the release, and reported revenue of €11.66 billion was slightly below the expected €11.71 billion (Seoul Economic Daily Signal, Nocut News).
– Korean heavyweights on October 14: Samsung Electronics closed unchanged at ₩232,000, and SK hynix fell 1.66% to ₩1,419,000.

Driver 3: Oil, US inflation data and buybacks ending

Seoul Economic Daily Signal said clashes between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels pushed WTI crude to around $95 a barrel. That raised worries about inflation and further US tightening. Investors also waited for the US September CPI, due at 9:30 p.m. KST on October 14. When it came out, it showed annual inflation of 3.7%, above the 3.6% economists expected, according to Yonhap via Korea JoongAng Daily. That report linked the CPI figure, along with doubts about AI spending, to the sharp fall at the October 15 open. Nocut News noted that Samsung Electronics’ share buyback ended early this month and SK hynix’s was expected to finish as early as next week, which raised concern about a gap in buying (Nocut News).

For context, the won closed at 1,338.3 per dollar at 3:30 p.m. on October 14, and the KOSDAQ ended at 823.88 (−1.57%).
